Tonight’s Edinburgh Pub Quizzes With Your Old Pal Dr Paul

I am a friend to you. I can help you. I can solve all of your problems. I am THE DOC. Come to my quizzes tonight.

7pm – Brass Monkey Leith. Jackpot: £50. Cheat: P.I.L. are in the music round – see vid below.

9pm – Safari Lounge. Jackpot £120. Cheat: One of the answers for the pic round is Liberal Democrats

P.I.L. was John Lydon’s vehicle after he had finished being Johnny Rotten out of the Sex Pistols.

I only knew the singles, never got an album and I remember thinking at the time that I was never very sure if I liked the songs or not.

I still feel that way. I get his voice. But he never topped the Pistols. Pistols were ace.

By the way, anyone can win that lovely cash that lurks at the end of every Dr Paul quiz. Last week at the Brass Leith £50 in single-crispy form went the way of Andy. Look how happy it made him:

Andy is so happy
Andy is so happy

Great Big Jackpot Tonight

Any time we go £200 or more, I’d consider that a great jackpot. Your views may differ. I don’t know.

7pm – Brass Monkey Leith. Jackpot £200. Cheat: One of the answers in the picture round is Gone With The Wind.

9pm – Safari Lounge. Jackpot: £30. Cheat: Them music round includes The New York Dolls who were, apparently Morrissey’s favourite band at one time. I only know a couple of their tunes but they rock. Reminds me a little of the Cramps, but with a more glam sound.

I just looked up the singer and am slightly surprised to discover he’s a 70s punk rock star who is still alive. Nice work, David Johansen.

Planet of The Jackpots

I’ve given away more than £700 since last Thursday. Early January was pretty sparse for jackpots but most of them seem to have been landed at the same time.

Anyway, life moves on and we have £60 plus £30 tonight,

The Joker & The Thief, 7pm

The newest pub on the Dr Paul circuit is a weird little booze hole on Elm Row (parto f Letih Walk). The trick is that it’s so nice once you get inside that it is almost impossible to leave. People have gone missing for weeks in there.

Jackpot: £60

Cheat: one of the answers tonight is Giglio. What’s Giglio? You’ll remember Giglio was the scene  of this disaster which is, amazingly, four years ago now.

The Brass Monkey (Drummond Street) 9pm

Jackpot: £30

Cheat: One of the songs in the music round is by The Damned who were a 70s/80s punk band but this was their biggest hit, a huge pop classic reworking of an old 60s number. One of the best covers of all time, I reckons (despite the relative shite-ness of the This Top of The Pops lip-sync moment):

Meanwhile, here’s some of the cash, and the cash winners of the last week :

(I’ll say that again: two hundred and ninety pounds) (zwei hunderd und neunzig fucking POUNDS, darling).

Cheat: Classy moment in the music round tonight is SHIRLEY BASSEY doing “Never Never Never”. Great performer, great song. Great fruit, great veg. Greater London Council.

Vegans Lose Tiebreak As Heart Rules Head

I had a tiebreaker situation at the Tolbooth Tavern the other night with a nearest-the-bull style question:

How many turkeys are killed and eaten for Christmas every year in the UK?

There were two normal teams in the tiebreaker and one team containing vegans.

Afraid of upsetting the kelp-munchers in their group, the vegan-influenced wrote down “600,000” knowing all the time the answer was probably higher.

Of course the answer was 10 million and one of the other teams won the tiebreak and the £120.

Moral: The world is not always what you wish it to be.

Thursday Cheat News Includes Happy Hardcore Legend

Last week’s Thursday  ended in a double jackpot for Omni. They literally won all the money. After that there was nothing left behind but scorched earth and weeds and dust.

Tonight the world begins again, brand new and fresh like a baby that hasn’t been drowned yet.

News and cheats:

7pm Argyle Bar and Cellar Monkey £20 cheat: Music round contains DJ Shrek – see below

9pm Newsroom £50. Cheat: One of the answers tonight is Australian Dollar
