Thursday Night Out In Edinburgh

Can you believe this? Last day of November. After this it’s just dark and cold and Christmas. After that, January blues. After that, February. No one likes February.

The only solution: PUB QUIZ

7pm – Argyle Bar (Cellar). Jackpot £120. Cheat: One of the answers in the music round is Deacon Blue. Click video below to hear the slightly awful song.

9pm – The Newsroom. Jackpot £50. Cheat answer: One of the picture round answers is Twickenham.

Can you feel the winter blues. Remember to trust Jesus to get you through.

Hmm … jam…

Justice Comes In Hashtags

We had these Americans in at the Newsroom a wee while ago and they were called #justiceforbradswife. They even had a T-shirt to go with their team name:

justice for brads wife

I asked them what this was about. I probably did in a Tom Selleck accent with extra-septic emphasis like:

“Hey buddy, what the heeeeyelll is that about? Pardner? Yee hah!”

They wouldn’t explain but said to look online and that I would see a hilarious story. So here I am, several months later, finally getting round to my investigation.

TLDR:

  • Some guy’s wife got sacked at a restaurant chain in the US.
  • husband goes mental about it on the internet.
  • Internet responds by creating giant hashtag war on the chain.

Who knows what happened in the end? I ran out of giving-a-fuck pretty quickly.

The American in the Newsroom promised hilarity but I think in all the links I have found in the last ten minutes or so I have not ACTUALLY laughed. It’s not really that funny. Someone gote

But then, I am now forty-five years old. When you’re 45 you still laugh at people falling down escalators, but very little else. Seen it all before

Verdict:

Poor show

The Truth About Colombian Resin #39

There was a team at the Newsroom last year named C-39-ers

I asked them what CR stood for and they told me “Colombian Resin

This immediately sounded very dodgy, so I asked for more detail, hoping that perhaps some drug-lord mega-bandits were bringing some extra glamour to the already-sexy pub.

Turns out there are no narcotics involved.

It’s actually the name of a plastic polymer used to make the lenses for glasses. The team were opticians.

Who knew? Who knew that you could be looking through some Colombia Resin #39 as of THIS VERY MOMENT.

Oh yeah

Last Ever Quiz Under Murderous Tory Regime Of Hate

Well, you never know. Corbyn might be PM this time tomorrow. Get to the pub!

7pm – Argyle Bar (Cellar). Jackpot : £120. Cheat: One of the music round artistes tonight is 3 Doors Down. See vid below to hear song.

9pm – The Newsroom. Jackpot £100. Cheat: One of the answers in the pic round is The BBC

I’ve just listened to this song. It’s really awful. It’s like it’s been put together by a committee of Tories and Lib Dems and performed by some radge out of UKIP.

If you like this music it’s because you are fundamentally a bad person.

Think about your life choices, for the sake of GOD.

Biggest Edinburgh Pub Quiz Jackpot Tonight Is In Marchmont

Which is unusual, because the Newsroom give us £50 a week and the ARgyle only £30 so it’s usually the city centre venue which is ahead but tonight… it’s the other way round:

7pm – Argyle Bar (And Cellar). Jackpot: £60, Cheat: There’s a music round track by PJ Harvey. Have a look at the video below to hear the song. It’s a great song. Strident.

9pm – The Newsroom. Jackpot: £50. Cheat: One of the answers in the picture round is “Morocco”.

The Newsroom might have a lower jackpot tonight but it will almost certainly have a higher glamour factor.

Sometimes there’s so much glamour in that place, you can’t breathe. Maybe it’s the excitement of being with the beautiful people. Maybe it’s diminished air quality on account of the fake tan continual released into the atmosphere.

Who knows?

Thursday Pub Quiz – Enormous Jackpot at Newsroom Tonight

The jackpot has reached terra incognita at the Newsroom. We are now buzzing at £350. Win it tonight.

7pm – Argyle Bar & Cellar. Jackpot: £90. Cheat: One of the answers in the picture round is Iraq.

9pm – The Newsroom. Jackpot £350. Cheat: Grace Jones is in the music round (see vid below).

I always tell people that the Newsroom is the thickest pub of the week and definitely the right place to come if you want to win money.

It’s not strictly true about the thick thing. It’s just that the Newsroom attracts staff-nights-out and the like where people are maybe not one hundred per cent quiz-focussed.

So if you know the quiz and how it goes, you usually do have a bit of an advantage over these passers-by. And it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but most people who come from other quizzes end up liking the Newsroom when they come. Tonight would be a good night to try it.

Giles Angels, for example, started off quizzing at the Joker but have found the Newsroom a happy hunting-ground. Maybe they’ll win the money tonight? We’ll see…

By the way, Grace Jones was what it was all about in the eighties. No one was more aloof, untouchable, and supreme as the Jones.

That was the image anyway. I had one of her albums. It was all right.
