Sunday 13th Jan 2019 – Sunday Quizzes

Tonight’s quizzes :

6pm – The Persevere. Jackpot: £90. Cheat: Peter Howson (pic round)

8pm – Tolbooth Tavern. Jackpot: £30. Cheat: “Jane” (music round)

Sunday Sunday. So good to me.

Voice is better this week. Don’t be afraid of a croaky QM. Come quiz.

Here is the video for tonight’s music round free answer which relates to the Tolbooth quiz at 8pm:

Obviously it’s Rod Stewart but the info you need is “Jane”. The round is looking for girls names that are in the song title.

Anyway, get yourself to the quiz and we’ll have some trivia-related and prize-based fun when you do.

Yeah.

Sunday 9th December – Quizzes Tonight

Tonight’s quizzes :

6pm – The Persevere. Jackpot: £30. Cheat: Shakespeare’s Sister (music round)

8pm – Tolbooth Tavern. Jackpot: £30. Cheat: Honda Civic (pic round)

Internet problems today, hence the late post and email. Apologies.

Keeping it brief in case it goes down again, so here is the video for tonight’s music round free answer which relates to the Persevere quiz at 6pm:

This was a monster hit back in the day. Couldn’t move for it. People were seemingly amazed that someone out of Bananarama could do something “dark”.

Still a good song, and a memorable video. The woman who isn’t the Bananarama woman was called Marcella Detroit. I like her hair.

Yeah.

Sun 2nd Dec – Sunday Night Quizzing In Edinburgh

Tonight’s quizzes :

6pm – The Persevere. Jackpot: £30. Cheat: Seal (pic round)

8pm – Tolbooth Tavern. Jackpot: £60. Cheat: Ingrid Michaelson (music round)

Sunday is here. December is here.  In between decorating the turkey and sending telegrams to the Queen, you should fit in  a visit to the pub quiz. The quiz, unlike your ex, is always here for you.

Meanwhile, here is the video for tonight’s music round free answer which relates to the Tolbooth Tavern quiz at 8pm:

I don’t know much about Ingrid Michaelson but I like the tune and the video is entertaining too: a back-to-front tribute to an old Robert Palmer vid from the eighties.

Palmer used to get stick for his videos being “sexist”. Thirty years later this vid turns it round. Nice work.

Anyway, see you at the quiz tonight and don’t forget: just cos its December, I aint going to be wearing tinsel or any of that hoo-hah. Calm down. It’s only Dec 2nd.

Yeah.

Sun 18 Nov – Quizzes Tonight

Tonight’s quizzes :

6pm – The Persevere. Jackpot: £60. Cheat: The Shamen (music round)

8pm – Tolbooth Tavern. Jackpot: £30. Cheat: Italy (pic round)

The tune for the cheat is tinged with tragedy.

In the days after filming the video in Tenerife for this 1991, Shamen member Will Sinnott died while swimming in the sea.

He was only 30.

The Shamen had been going for years but were just breaking big at this point. He got to be a pop star for a moment and the he died.

I guess dem’s da breaks.

Here is the video:

Anyway, see you at the quiz tonight and don’t forget your shoes, cos it’s November and you don’t want to be cutting about with nae shoes.

Yeah.

Sun 11 Nov – Sunday Quizzes Tonight

Tonight’s quizzes :

6pm – The Persevere. Jackpot: £30. Cheat: ‘A Beautiful Mind’ (pic round)

8pm – Tolbooth Tavern. Jackpot: £90. Cheat: Maria McKee (music round)

Wooft. That tune in the music round at tonight’s Tolbooth quiz is a hammer and tongs mega belter.

Here it is:

Nearly as good as last week’s photo from the Persevere which flies in the face of the received wisdom that you can’t give booze to a baby.

Booze for the baby?
Baby loves quiz

Yeah.

Sun 4th Nov – Quizzes Tonight

Tonight’s quizzes :

6pm – The Persevere. Jackpot: £90. Cheat: Morrissey (music round)

8pm – Tolbooth Tavern. Jackpot: £60. Cheat: Leatherback (pic round)

Ah – I see we have a couple of rollovers tonight which have been a bit harder to find on Sundays recently.

That’s good.

Also good is old grumpo himself, Morrissey. This is his song which appears in the music round at the Percy tonight:

The song is called ‘I Have Forgiven Jesus’. Morrissey makes me laugh every single time. In fact I made a Moz-meme the other day. Wanna see it?

Image may contain: 2 people, text

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha Morrissey.

By the way, Sunday has a meetup group who come along to the quiz. It’s great if you want to quiz but don’t have a team.

Yeah.

Sunday Pub Quizzes In Edinburgh

Tonight’s quizzes :

6pm – The Persevere. Jackpot: £30. Cheat: Kenya (pic round)

8pm – Tolbooth Tavern. Jackpot: £60. Cheat: Hazell Dean (music round)

The new bus schedule for the 35 is playing havoc with my ability to transfer smoothly between the Sunday quizzes. I know you couldn’t care less. I’m just saying.

Anyway, here’s the music round cheat for tonight’s quiz at the Tolbooth – it’s a fantastic 1984 song. You’ve no idea how club and hard this sounded in 1984 when you were used to straight pop on Radio 1.

I was too young to go to clubs and this was my first exposure to proper Hi-NRG sounds. Totally great.

If you like all that old TOTP stuff, make sure and watch the documentaries on youtube. The BBC made a series: each episode is a single year, viewed through the lens of Britain’s favourite pop show.

They cancelled TOTP in 2006 which, oddly enough, is where everything in the world started to go wrong. Causation? Correlation? Who knows

Anyway, however it works, I’ll se you at the quiz later.

Yeah.

Sunday Night Quiz Action In Edinburgh

Tonight’s quizzes :

6pm – The Persevere. Jackpot: £30. Cheat: INXS (music round)

8pm – Tolbooth Tavern. Jackpot: £30. Cheat: American Beauty (pic round)

Is there supposed to be a named storm today? Maybe aye, maybe no but there will be a whirlwind of questions and a tornado of answers plus a monsoon of prizes. At the quiz. Ooh yeah.

Here’s the music round cheat which pertains to the Persevere tonight. It’s INXS who were Australians who did not own crocodiles:

You’re probably too young to remember, but INXS were a big deal back in late 80s / early 90s. They stopped having hits when everyone realised the songs were all the same but for a while they tranced the public and all the girls fancied the singer.

But the singer ended up killing himself in 1997. It was only a couple of months after Lady Princess Diana The Queen of Hearts got smashed up in Paris, so the British public, steeled against tragedy, dealt with the story easily, with a shrug.

That’s the thing about celebrity deaths: you either care or you don’t and there’s loads of them these days so its even harder to care.

However the news that Chas out of Chas and Dave died yesterday is a bigger one than most, in my book.

Chas and Dave were funny but they weren’t comedians. Chas was a musical genius and they rocked hard. The maestro is dead. Luckily, however, the recordings and the youtube remain so you can keep Chazzing and Daveing forever:

Yeah.

Yo!

The Best Sunday Night Entertainment Is A Pub Quiz

Tonight’s quizzes :

6pm – The Persevere. Jackpot: £90. Cheat: Renoir (pic round)

8pm – Tolbooth Tavern. Jackpot: £120. Cheat: Steps (music round)

Here are the things you COULD do in Edinburgh on a Sunday night:

  1. Go to the Tattoo. This is a bad idea. The festival is over and the temporary stadium has been dismantled. It is over.
  2. Go to the cinema. This is an awful idea. The plots are all the same and Tom Cruise just gets richer and richer for hacking out the same pish, repeatedly.
  3. Eat out in a restaurant. Nah. Paid dining has been revealed by scientists to be the single most disappointing way that modern humans waste their wages money. I can’t argue with scientists.
  4. Get tae the Pub Quiz. Yasssss. Thumbs all the way UP. Come on. Sexy time.

To be fair, you could also go for a game of darts and there’s not much negative I could say about that. Darts is barry, but I’d personally prefer it if you came to the quiz.

Here’s the music round cheat which pertains to the Tolbooth tonight. It’s Steps:

The video is when they used this power pop to ROCK Hyde Park:

And you can say what you like. Steps were great.

By the way, after a string of midweek jackpot wins, tonight is as big as the pots get for the week, particularly the £150 at the Tolbooth.

Roll it up and smoke it.

Yo!

Sunday Night Pub Quiz Scene

Tonight’s quizzes :

6pm – The Persevere. Jackpot: £30. Cheat: Supergrass (pic round)

8pm – Tolbooth Tavern. Jackpot: £30. Cheat: Star Trek: Voyager (pic round)

As you know, it’s pishing with rain out there. Be careful when travelling to and from the quiz. Keep your arms inside the train. Walk don’t run.

It’s very late in the day, so I’m just going to cut straight into the free music round answer which relates to the Persevere:

The song is by Supergrass, an old Top of The Pops performance which sounds genuinely live.

See you at the quiz tonight!
