The new bus schedule for the 35 is playing havoc with my ability to transfer smoothly between the Sunday quizzes. I know you couldn’t care less. I’m just saying.
Anyway, here’s the music round cheat for tonight’s quiz at the Tolbooth – it’s a fantastic 1984 song. You’ve no idea how club and hard this sounded in 1984 when you were used to straight pop on Radio 1.
I was too young to go to clubs and this was my first exposure to proper Hi-NRG sounds. Totally great.
If you like all that old TOTP stuff, make sure and watch the documentaries on youtube. The BBC made a series: each episode is a single year, viewed through the lens of Britain’s favourite pop show.
They cancelled TOTP in 2006 which, oddly enough, is where everything in the world started to go wrong. Causation? Correlation? Who knows
Anyway, however it works, I’ll se you at the quiz later.
Is there supposed to be a named storm today? Maybe aye, maybe no but there will be a whirlwind of questions and a tornado of answers plus a monsoon of prizes. At the quiz. Ooh yeah.
Here’s the music round cheat which pertains to the Persevere tonight. It’s INXS who were Australians who did not own crocodiles:
You’re probably too young to remember, but INXS were a big deal back in late 80s / early 90s. They stopped having hits when everyone realised the songs were all the same but for a while they tranced the public and all the girls fancied the singer.
But the singer ended up killing himself in 1997. It was only a couple of months after Lady Princess Diana The Queen of Hearts got smashed up in Paris, so the British public, steeled against tragedy, dealt with the story easily, with a shrug.
That’s the thing about celebrity deaths: you either care or you don’t and there’s loads of them these days so its even harder to care.
However the news that Chas out of Chas and Dave died yesterday is a bigger one than most, in my book.
Chas and Dave were funny but they weren’t comedians. Chas was a musical genius and they rocked hard. The maestro is dead. Luckily, however, the recordings and the youtube remain so you can keep Chazzing and Daveing forever:
The music round cheat for the Persevere is a fairly obscure one. Unless you’re my age. And into the kind of stuff I was into then, specifically, at that time. So it’s probably quite a good one to give you as a cheat.
Video is home made:
Next week’s Sunday quiz at the Percy may be slightly affected by the World Cup Final but hopefully not.
Kick off is 4pm so if it runs to 90mins then we’ll be OK. If there’s extra time we might start slightly late.
Tolbooth will be unaffected.
So let’s hope Belgium pump Croatia in normal time.
Speaking of football, did you know that the Hibs season starts today? Outrageous. Some kind of testimonial apparently.
Of course, the real season doesn’t quite start yet. The first tie in the Scottish League Cup is not until Wednesday night.
Sunday. You can march along Princes Street for women’s rights in the afternoon then come to the quiz afterwards and win the money, blow those MEN out of the water.
Which men? The men that make up BLUE FOX TUESDAY, who are threatening to win another seasonal championship at the Persevere.
Tonight’s cheat music is Julian Cope (for the Tolbooth Tavern) with an interesting take on suicide bombers. It’s titled: ‘All The Blowing-Themselves-Up Motherfuckers (Will Realise The Minute They Die That They Were Suckers)‘.
No official video as Cope in a not a bankrolled mega-artist, but someone has put the song to some footage from Afghanistan. Here’s a non-reality version if you would like to hear the song but avoid the gore:
If you ARE actually a suicide bomber, then don’t. All you do is kill people and make a mess. Everyone is sad and nothing gets fixed.
Come to the quiz instead and win booze and money! Everyone is happy and all problems are solved.
