The Argyle Bar quiz is on Thursday at 7pm. Usually Downstairs

This Is Thursday. Don’t Be A Fool. Come To The Quiz.

Quizzes Tonight:

7pm – Argyle Bar (Cellar). Jackpot £30. Cheat answer: The Tick (pic round)

9pm – The Newsroom. Jackpot £50. Cheat answer: Kool & The Gang (music round).

The cheat answers for tonight include this song by Kool & The Gang:

The song is probably about sex but it might just be about disco. Nobody knows.

Anyway, as you do know: Thursday is currently MOVIE Thursday: I’m counting down the list of my ten favourite films of all time.

I’ve been at this for two months now and here is the chart so far:

10 .Flash Gordon (1980)

9. Jesus Christ Superstar (1979)

8. The Good The Bad & The Ugly (1966)

7. Zardoz (1974)

6. Das Boot (1981)

5. The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou (2004)

4. Hair (1979)

This week:

3. Mary Poppins (1964)

This week’s greatest film ever made is a straightforward crowd-pleaser, (although not in the profanisaurus sense).

Basically, if you don’t like Mary Poppins you must be dead. Your soul escaped and your body is a rotting shell. You are a virtual corpse.

How the HELL can you not love this?

The songs are great. The emotions are simple and everlasting. And while the children might be wee dicks, they mainly stay out of the way of Dick Van Dyke who is busy being really really entertaining.

Are you trying to say you don’t like dancing penguins?

Are you trying to say that the word Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious doesn’t delight you in some small way, every single time, no matter how old and cynical you have become?

You must be dead.

Look, there goes your soul, flying over the chimney tops like a shit cloud. Because you’re dead.

But never mind. Here’s a wee bird.

And if you think it’s just fluff, remember that the beating heart of the Mary Poppins story is universal suffrage:

And we respect the politics of this. Excellent.

Next week: we enter the crazy world of Dr Paul’s favourite films ever – The Top 2.

Voucher Report

First in an occasional series of reports detailing what the winning team did with their booze voucher.

LOCATION: The Argyle Bar

DATE: Last Thursday

TEAM; Omni

bunnahabhain-12-year-old-whisky
BOOZE

BOOZE:

2 x Tennents

3 x Bunnahabhain

1 x Black Sambuca

1 x Tequila

COMMENT:

Nice work. I know nowt about whisky but apparently Bunnahabhain is a good one. The Sambuca and the Tequila add urban street edge while it’s all backed up with a pair of basic pints, the kind of pints that built Scotland into the international superpower that she is today.

Well played, Team Omni

Prince Is A Spooky Bastard

When Prince died, just over a year ago, I first heard the news as I turned up for a Thursday quiz at the Argyle Bar.

To my surprise, Prince featured in the picture round that night. Obviously I hadn’t planned it. My quiz scheduling was nothing to do with the death of The Artist.

Prince is Pic 3

Purple Spooks.

Anyway, next thing you know a year has sped by. Prince was never one of my favourites so I hardly ever thought of him or his demies.

But then, exactly one year later (one day out – but still a Thursday) – he turns up again on his death anniversary, again at the Argyle Bar, this time in the music round.

Again, not scheduled deliberately. I’d forgotten all about Prince being dead and I program the music and picture rounds a month ahead anyway.

Pure Purple Heebie Jeebies.

Cool down Prince, ya mad ghost.

Thursday 28th April

Freezing, snowing and wet. Must be nearly May. Tonight’s quizzes are the last of the month so it’s your last chance to play Dead Pool for May. If the weather continues like this, it will be a wonder if ANYONE survives till June.

Great jackpots tonight though, so if you’re going to win one before you pop, tonight would be a good time to do it.

Cellar Monkey (Argyle Bar), 7pm

Jackpot: £200

Cheat: One of the music round answers is Kelly Llorenna (see video below)

Newsroom, 9pm

Jackpot: Also £200

Cheat: One of the answers tonight is Aberdeen. I know that’s depressing but on’t worry, it’s only one question.

Thursday 21st April

Quizzes tonight both carry a prizey jackpot megatotal of £150 each so you could come out of this party with three tonna wonga, if you play it and play it good.

Argyle Bar (Cellar Monkey) , 7pm

Jackpot: £150

Cheat: One of the music round clips is by Dave Gahan, who used to be the singer out of Depeche Mode. It’s a bit fucking obscure to be honest, but that’s why you like reading this – clues you in on some of the difficult ones. Puts you one step ahead of da noobs. Video below.

Newsroom, 9pm

Jackpot: Also £150

Cheat: One of the answers in the picture round is “Bride Wars“. Ach, you probably knew that one already but if you didn’t then that’s a gift from me.

Speaking of gifts, I hope the mystery prizes are better than last night’s Kung-Fu Panda Whoopee Cushion. That may have been a new low.

Here’s the Dave Gahan vid:

Square Go: Thursday 14th April

It’s a good old-fashioned square-meal plain-deal cop-a-feel tonight. Yep: darn straight there’s a whole ONE HUNNER of your old POUNDS on the jackpot at each Thursday night quiz.

Come along and play with us.

Argyle Bar (Cellar Monkey), 7pm

Jackpot: £100

Cheat: one of the music round hits is by The Shamen. It was massive back in the day. See video below. Sad note: the video was filmed in Tenerife and straight after filming was finished, Will SInnot (the long-haired Shamen member) died when he accidentally drowned while going for a swim.

Newsroom, 9pm

Jackpot: £100

Cheat: one of the picture round answers is Vauxhall Cavalier. Can it get any more vanilla?

Thursday 7th April

Quizzes up town and in your face tonight. Perhaps the sausage question will arise.

Argyle Bar (Cellar Monkey), 7pm

Jackpot: £50

Cheat: The answers in the music round are all TV themes. One of them is “Tales of The Unexpected“, see video below. For people of a similar age to your favourite local quizmaster, the tune likely conjures up deep trauma. This is how we were raised.

Newsroom, 9pm

Jackpot: £50

Cheat: One of the answers tonight is “French
