Sunday Night, So Bright, Don’t Fight. Quiz Glory Awaits.

Tonight’s quizzes :

6pm – The Persevere. Jackpot: £60. Cheat: Leffe (pic round)

8pm – Tolbooth Tavern. Jackpot: £120. Cheat: Westlife (music round)

Hey. It’s Sunday and, as I type, the weather is good. Take advantage, go outside for a while.

Then when you realise how tedious outside can be (nowhere to buy beer, nowhere to politely piss) then come back inside to the pub where everyone is your friend and you can get food and booze and win the quiz.

Here is a clip from the music round at the Tolbooth tonight:

Just like the Wizard of Oz, the video begins in black and white and then dramatically leaps into colour just as it gets to the good bit.

The good bit in the Wizard of Oz is where Dorothy travels to Oz and kills the witch and meets the Munchkins and literally everything goes completely bananas.

In the Westlife video, the “good bit” is just the chorus. 1939 > 2001

I mean, it’s a decent enough song. It’s the sort of thing that would have easily won Eurovision in 1995.

I’ve started properly listening to Eurovision songs for next month. The criticism of this year’s Iceland entry is that it sounds like a winner from the 1990s. It is predicted to fail to qualify from the semis.

My favourite so far is Greece or France or Cyprus or Moldova. Not sure yet – will need a few more listens. I’ll keep you updated because I know you care, deeply.

Monday Night Pub Quizzes In Edinburgh: Leith and Abbeyhill

Quizzes in Edinburgh Tonight:

7pm – Brass Monkey Leith. Jackpot: £100. Cheat: Captain And Tennille (music round)

9pm – Safari Lounge. Jackpot £90. Cheat news: Seal (pic round)

The song in the Brass Monkey Leith music round is by Captain & Tennille who were a big deal in the seventies.

For a while in the 1990s I was right into their schmaltz, I collected their albums.

Now in the modern era I can watch them perform on youtube, live and direct from the actual 1970s.

In true 70s TV superstar style, they always looked a bit wasted. I don’t really know what Quaaludes are but I bet they were on Quaaludes. These are drugs that always get mentioned in 70s rock life-fail biography paragraphs.

They were a couple and were married for 39 years and then she left him. He had some disease along the lines of Parkinson’s. She felt the marriage was a sham and only really there to please the fans.

I read so many of these stories when researching questions. Sometimes I feel sad for the participants and other times I feel nothing. I feel sorry for Tennille and the Captain. Maybe it’s because I like their hits. Perhaps I’m that shallow.

The Truth About Colombian Resin #39

There was a team at the Newsroom last year named C-39-ers

I asked them what CR stood for and they told me “Colombian Resin

This immediately sounded very dodgy, so I asked for more detail, hoping that perhaps some drug-lord mega-bandits were bringing some extra glamour to the already-sexy pub.

Turns out there are no narcotics involved.

It’s actually the name of a plastic polymer used to make the lenses for glasses. The team were opticians.

Who knew? Who knew that you could be looking through some Colombia Resin #39 as of THIS VERY MOMENT.

Oh yeah

Great Picture, Shit Question

When compiling picture rounds I often face the dilemma of finding a brilliant picture but with no decent question to go with it.

It always feels like such a shame.

Tonight this role is being played by this multiple angle medley of Lesley Judd shots.

lesley judd acid

It looks like a blotter full of Blue Peter acid from the 70s. I love the 1970s, I love Lesley Judd and I love acid, so this is pretty much perfection.

I just can’t think of a question to go with it…

K Hole No Good For Q & A

Quite often I see people are too pissed to continue the quiz, but last Monday was more unusual.

After two rounds at the Brass Monkey Leith, one bloke gave me his pen and sheets and told me, very politely:

“Sorry dude, we can’t do any more of the quiz – I’ve had too much ketamine today.”

Fair enough. Hope its worn off in time for tonight.
