Sunday Night Pub Quiz Edinburgh

Tonight’s quizzes :

6pm – The Persevere. Jackpot: £90. Cheat: Nick Drake (music round)

8pm – Tolbooth Tavern. Jackpot: £120. Cheat: Reese Witherspoon (pic round)

Come on now and get out of your lazy fat sunday sofa. Shake a leg. Break a sweat. Move a muscle. GET TO THE QUIZ.

You will be rewarded with intellectual stimulation, a drink and a chance to achieve legend status.

Here’s the music round cheat which pertains to the Percy tonight. It’s Nick Drake:

Nice stuff. Quality hippy folk sound. Drake never made the 27 Club-  he died when he was just 26 years old.

Drake’s death was an overdose and was officially ruled as suicide, although the singer left no note.

Don’t worry though, don’t be spooked. I’ve listened to this song for many years and although it’s performed in a minor key, it hasn’t made me kill myself. I haven’t caught suicide by listening to it.

Which means the quiz will go ahead as usual tonight!

Take note – £120 at the Tolbooth tonight. Yeah.

Wednesday Wonder Punch

Two quizzes from me and one from Gordon down at Harmonium – the vegan pub in Leith.

7pm – The Joker & The Thief. Jackpot £180. Cheat answer – Del Shannon turns up in the music round. See vid below to hear the song…

8pm – Harmonium. Jackpot £60. Cheat answer – One of the picture round answers is Italy

9pm – Brass Monkey, Drummond Street. Jackpot £60 Cheat answer – the picture round contains an answer ‘Open Water. It’s that film where they go diving and then get left behind by the boat.

The Del Shannon song is a belter. A real pop classic from the early days. I like the bit where the girls dance round him during the middle eight looking for all the world like pagans who are about to sacrifices Del.

Obviously there were no human sacrifices in the studio that day but things still didn’t end well for Del. Suffering from depression, Shannon shot himself dead with a rifle in 1990. He was 55 years old.

Wednesday Night Quiz

Hey. It’s my birthday. To you this is utterly immaterial. You just want to hear about tonight’s quiz:

7pm – The Joker & The Thief. Jackpot: £90. Cheat news: The music round contains John Leyton. – see video below to see the genius.

This was number one in 1961. I love the sound of it, so dramatic. That’s the Joe Meek sound. Joe Meek was the producer and you can see him in the video, winding bits of tape and what not. No apps in them days.

Joe Meek recorded hundreds of artists and produced loads of pop bangers, arguably becoming the first producer-as-a-star. He didn’t play an instrument himself but he was the pioneer of the field where you don’t have to ‘know’ music to make music.

Meek was clearly a genius but was a bit unhinged. A wee read of his Wikipedia page will take you through the madness, repressed sexuality, paranoia, court cases and anger issues which led him to the 3rd February 1967 when took a shotgun, killed his landlady and then himself.

Murder, suicide, The End.

Thursday Pub Quizzes Edinburgh

Hey. Come out and get a grab of the big time. Tonight.

7pm – Argyle Bar. Jackpot £150. Cheat: A character named Midnighter is in the picture round.

9pm – Newsroom. Jackpot: £100. Cheat: The music round includes sixties super Spaniards, Los Bravos. Check out to the video below to hear the (familiar) song.

Los Bravos were operating in Spain, in the 60s, under Franco and the song proves that Fascism does not necessarily result in bad pop music.

The year after Los Bravos had a missive international hit with this song (including no.2 in the UK charts) the keyboard player committed suicide after his wife died in a car accident.

Heavy vibes, man.
