Wednesday 27th Feb

Quizzes tonight:

7pm – The Joker & The Thief. Jackpot £30. Cheat: Humpback Whale (pic round)

9pm – Brass Monkey, Drummond Street. Jackpot £30 Cheat: Jan Hammer (pic round)

Wednesday night. You feel it? Yeah. Me too.

The thing about reading this is you get a wee boost: a free answer. The free answer for tonight’s music round at the Brass is Jan Hammer who impressed us in the 1980s with his large keyboards.

Flamingos and Speedboats

Before looking up Wikipedia, I’m going to predict whether Jan Hammer is still alive or whether he is now dead. I’m going to go for ALIVE.

Yass. He’s alive and he is 70 years old. He’ll be 71 if he makes it mid-April. Wiki tells me that Hammer also did the music for two series of ‘Chancer’, a British TV series starring Clive Owen as a conman which I simply have no memory of whatsoever.

To be honest, the theme tune is a bit shit:

So that’s Jan Hammer. Underwhelming.

One thing that is NOT underwhelming is the thrill and pleasure you get from winning the quiz. It’s a feeling like no other feeling. Just look at these people:

Come on. Let’s go out and do the quiz.

Wed 9th Jan 2019 – Wednesday Quizzes

Quizzes tonight:

7pm – The Joker & The Thief. Jackpot £30. Cheat: England (pic round)

9pm – Brass Monkey, Drummond Street. Jackpot £180 Cheat: Senor Coconut (music round)

Note the large jackpot at the Brass.

Yeah – The first Joker & The Thief quiz of the year finally marks a return to full normality. Let’s enjoy the straightness, the orthodoxy and the sheer normality all the way up to the Festival. First half of the year is the best half of the year.

And, in football, it’s an odd year so there’s not even a European Championships or World Cup this year to wreck everything in June/July… no… NO.. WAIT – The Women’s World Cup is on this summer in France and Scotland have qualified.

It’s the first time a Scotland team have qualified for the World Cup since 1998 which is pretty much since you lot have been born.

But it is women’s football, so will the occasion be marginalized, ignored and swept under the carpet?

Or will the paucity of Scottish football success manifest itself in a big fuss and a big buzz for the women’s team?

I have no idea which way this will go. I suspect the former and kinda hope for the latter. Me and the missus and the kid were even thinking of going over to France for one of the games. Quite fancy Scotland v Japan in Rennes – 14th June.

Anyway, sidetracked. Here is tonight’s music round cheat clue which is for the Brass Monkey:

This is one of Senor Coconut’s terrific techno-merengue-style covers of the songs of Kraftwerk.

Now, Kraftwerk has always been great but just sometimes you listen and think “this is all a bit exact, a bit teutonic – it needs some loose Latin“. And, happily, Senor Coconut fills this need.

I was reading about him the other day. His real name is Uwe Schmidt and he’s a German bloke who was so into Latin techno that he moved to Chile. The video was filmed in Santiago, Chile and is worth a watch.

Disappointingly. the fat bloke with the maracas who stars in the video is not the actual Senor Coconut. But you can’t have everything.

Anyway, come to the quiz and we’ll all have a good time.

Wed 2nd January 2019 – Only One Quiz Tonight

Quizzes tonight:

9pm – Brass Monkey, Drummond Street. Jackpot £150 Cheat: Badly Drawn Boy (music round)

The Joker is still closed for festivity or lack thereof so just the one quiz tonight and then as from tomorrow (Jan 3rd – the most wonderful time of the year) – everything is BACK TO NORMAL and I can return to an excellent mood. Plus, New Year is a reminder that it’s only 5 months to Eurovision, the true Christmas.

Anyway, there is a cracking £150 jackpot tonight at the Brass Monkey so come along and win.

Here’s tonight’s music round cheat clue:

I’ve never seen this but just watched it now. The video includes a young couple (with braces) who get locked together in a kiss and have to be driven to A&E by Badly Drawn Boy.

The video includes a caption at the end claiming the story is based on a true story from Mexico in 1994 where real teenagers really did get locked together in a kiss in their car and “caused a 10-mile tailback”

However, one or two minutes of Googling has found no evidence of this. Did it ever happen? I don’t know.

Anyway – Happy New Year – I hope you nineteen is legendary. See you tonight.

Wednesday 5th Dec – Quizzes Tonight In Edinburgh

Quizzes tonight:

7pm – The Joker & The Thief. Jackpot £30. Cheat: OMD (music round)

9pm – Brass Monkey, Drummond Street. Jackpot £60 Cheat: Myanmar (pic round)

It’s midweek in December, the month that’s dominated by Christmas. All I’m saying about Christmas is don’t miss out on Cunto Cards – the only gift that’s guaranteed to raise a laugh this year

Cunto Cards
Cunto Cards. Utterly hilarious. Twelve pounds.

Anyway, Cunto is just the sideline. The main business here is pub quiz and tonight we have NICE QUIZ for you.

Here’s the tune that’s my free answer for the music round at the Joker tonight. It’s eighties Scousers, OMD:

I always thought the singer out of OMD looked like John Collins who used to play for Hibs and Celtic.

Whaddya reckon?

I hope you like that. It took over ten minutes.

Anyway, come to the quiz and we’ll all live happily ever after.

Wed Quizzes – Oct 24th

Quizzes tonight: Come out and feel what others feel.

7pm – The Joker & The Thief. Jackpot £60. Cheat: Boney M (music round)

9pm – Brass Monkey, Drummond Street. Jackpot £60 Cheat: Bassoon (pic round)

By the way, do yourself a favour and say “bassoon” out loud. It is very satisfying.

Here’s the music round cheat for tonight at the Joker. It is the greatest (Christmas) song ever recorded. Maybe except the Johnny Mathis one.

Totally great. Let’s get this Halloween pish oot the way. Bring on Christmas.

Come to the quiz and let love and brotherhood and peace reign all over the land.

Yeah,

Wednesday Delight – Evening Pub Quizzes for Your Delight

Quizzes tonight:

7pm – The Joker & The Thief. Jackpot £60. Cheat: Ashanti (music round)

9pm – Brass Monkey, Drummond Street. Jackpot £90 Cheat: James Franco (pic round)

Tonight sees the final quiz at Brass Monkey Drummond Street until September. The Monkey is situated right in the heart of the festival maelstrom and it means the bar is too transient to achieve quiz during August. Come along tonight to win the cash: £90

All other quizzes continue as normal during the great annual disruption.

Tonight’s music round cheat bonus at the Joker & The Thief is Ashanti and she sounds like this:

Everyone is falling out with each other in the video. It’s like one giant bad mood.

High production values though, like a movie…

Dead Pool resumes tonight, taking entries for August droppers…

Meanwhile, Cunto cards continue to fly. If you want a packet of the game that’s rocking the nation, hit me up – I usually have two or three packets with me at the quiz.

You can also get them online

Look at the happy people playing Cunto at the Joker last week. Yeah:

No World Cup – Come To The Quiz

Quizzes tonight:

7pm – The Joker & The Thief. Jackpot £60. Cheat: Red (pic round)

9pm – Brass Monkey, Drummond Street. Jackpot £150 Cheat: Lily Allen (music round)

The World Cup is great and everything but it goes on a bit. Thankfully there is a couple of days break so we can get on with our lives in the interim.

And by “get on without lives” I mean – come to the quiz.

£60 and £150 are the prizes tonight. Here’s a sneak look at one of the music round answers for the Brass Monkey (Drummond Street) tonight:

The song is trying hard to be provocative, different and original and controversial but music-wise it’s poor. I’d rather listen to Queen or James Last.

I just read her Wikipedia page to try and find something nice to say about her as balance but to be honest its mainly a litany of minor rows.

Let’s talk about Holland instead.

The correct term is ‘The Netherlands‘ although, in a pub quiz setting, your quizmaster should usually accept ‘Holland‘ as a perfectly acceptable alternative answer.

The point is that he should know what you meant.

This is the case at Dr Paul quiz. If you spell something wrong or get something slightly wrong but I know what you meant, you’ll usually get the points. (See rules)

It is my humble effort not to be a cunt.

Sometimes we all fail.

Wednesday Pub Quiz Action (Edinburgh)

Quizzes tonight:

7pm – The Joker & The Thief. Jackpot £30. Cheat: Ronald Reagan (pic round)

9pm – Brass Monkey, Drummond Street. Jackpot £120 Cheat: Macklemore (music round)

Here’s the music round cheat for the Joker:

The song is pish, the video is worse.

It looks like it was made by the same people that make those beer adverts where a perfectly constructed cross-section of races all go to a festival and everyone has a great (and yet meaningful) time.

The racial cross-section is always perfectly constructed in this scenario. But the rule is no oldies and no uggos. Everyone comes from a catalogue. With the possible exception of one fat person who is a lot of “fun”.

At the same time as diversity is rigidly ticked-off, stereotypes abound. A proper load of shite.

Anyway, as luck would have it the music round includes neither the turd of a video nor any clip longer than twenty seconds, “so we’re good” as the people in the shit video would undoubtedly say.

By the way: A HUNDRED AND TWENTY QUID AT THE MONKEY TONIGHT. That’s pretty good. I imagine all the stars will be turning up for that: Emma Watson, Tom Hanks, etc.
