The thing about reading this is you get a wee boost: a free answer. The free answer for tonight’s music round at the Brass is Jan Hammer who impressed us in the 1980s with his large keyboards.
Before looking up Wikipedia, I’m going to predict whether Jan Hammer is still alive or whether he is now dead. I’m going to go for ALIVE.
Yass. He’s alive and he is 70 years old. He’ll be 71 if he makes it mid-April. Wiki tells me that Hammer also did the music for two series of ‘Chancer’, a British TV series starring Clive Owen as a conman which I simply have no memory of whatsoever.
To be honest, the theme tune is a bit shit:
So that’s Jan Hammer. Underwhelming.
One thing that is NOT underwhelming is the thrill and pleasure you get from winning the quiz. It’s a feeling like no other feeling. Just look at these people:
Yeah – The first Joker & The Thief quiz of the year finally marks a return to full normality. Let’s enjoy the straightness, the orthodoxy and the sheer normality all the way up to the Festival. First half of the year is the best half of the year.
And, in football, it’s an odd year so there’s not even a European Championships or World Cup this year to wreck everything in June/July… no… NO.. WAIT – The Women’s World Cup is on this summer in France and Scotland have qualified.
It’s the first time a Scotland team have qualified for the World Cup since 1998 which is pretty much since you lot have been born.
But it is women’s football, so will the occasion be marginalized, ignored and swept under the carpet?
Or will the paucity of Scottish football success manifest itself in a big fuss and a big buzz for the women’s team?
I have no idea which way this will go. I suspect the former and kinda hope for the latter. Me and the missus and the kid were even thinking of going over to France for one of the games. Quite fancy Scotland v Japan in Rennes – 14th June.
Anyway, sidetracked. Here is tonight’s music round cheat clue which is for the Brass Monkey:
This is one of Senor Coconut’s terrific techno-merengue-style covers of the songs of Kraftwerk.
Now, Kraftwerk has always been great but just sometimes you listen and think “this is all a bit exact, a bit teutonic – it needs some loose Latin“. And, happily, Senor Coconut fills this need.
I was reading about him the other day. His real name is Uwe Schmidt and he’s a German bloke who was so into Latin techno that he moved to Chile. The video was filmed in Santiago, Chile and is worth a watch.
Disappointingly. the fat bloke with the maracas who stars in the video is not the actual Senor Coconut. But you can’t have everything.
Anyway, come to the quiz and we’ll all have a good time.
The Joker is still closed for festivity or lack thereof so just the one quiz tonight and then as from tomorrow (Jan 3rd – the most wonderful time of the year) – everything is BACK TO NORMAL and I can return to an excellent mood. Plus, New Year is a reminder that it’s only 5 months to Eurovision, the true Christmas.
Anyway, there is a cracking £150 jackpot tonight at the Brass Monkey so come along and win.
Here’s tonight’s music round cheat clue:
I’ve never seen this but just watched it now. The video includes a young couple (with braces) who get locked together in a kiss and have to be driven to A&E by Badly Drawn Boy.
The video includes a caption at the end claiming the story is based on a true story from Mexico in 1994 where real teenagers really did get locked together in a kiss in their car and “caused a 10-mile tailback”
However, one or two minutes of Googling has found no evidence of this. Did it ever happen? I don’t know.
Anyway – Happy New Year – I hope you nineteen is legendary. See you tonight.
Tonight sees the final quiz at Brass Monkey Drummond Street until September. The Monkey is situated right in the heart of the festival maelstrom and it means the bar is too transient to achieve quiz during August. Come along tonight to win the cash: £90
All other quizzes continue as normal during the great annual disruption.
Tonight’s music round cheat bonus at the Joker & The Thief is Ashanti and she sounds like this:
Everyone is falling out with each other in the video. It’s like one giant bad mood.
High production values though, like a movie…
Dead Pool resumes tonight, taking entries for August droppers…
Meanwhile, Cunto cards continue to fly. If you want a packet of the game that’s rocking the nation, hit me up – I usually have two or three packets with me at the quiz.
It looks like it was made by the same people that make those beer adverts where a perfectly constructed cross-section of races all go to a festival and everyone has a great (and yet meaningful) time.
The racial cross-section is always perfectly constructed in this scenario. But the rule is no oldies and no uggos. Everyone comes from a catalogue. With the possible exception of one fat person who is a lot of “fun”.
At the same time as diversity is rigidly ticked-off, stereotypes abound. A proper load of shite.
Anyway, as luck would have it the music round includes neither the turd of a video nor any clip longer than twenty seconds, “so we’re good” as the people in the shit video would undoubtedly say.
By the way: A HUNDRED AND TWENTY QUID AT THE MONKEY TONIGHT. That’s pretty good. I imagine all the stars will be turning up for that: Emma Watson, Tom Hanks, etc.
Incidentally Cunto Cards are back in stock and I will have a few decks with me tonight if you’re looking for a pack.
