The biggest quiz outrage last night at the Brass Monkey Shore came in the list round when I asked teams for 5 countries situated on the equator.
Several teams, naturally, wrote “Equatorial Guinea” which is a pretty good answer, on the face of it. It’s not the most famous country, so some teams wouldn’t know it and check out the name: Equatorial Guinea. So it must be on the equator. Right?
You would think.
It turns out the whole country is North of the line. About 50 miles North at nearest point. It’s the country whose name is a lie. It’s false pretences. It’s taking the piss. It’s a rip off.
I’d advise anyone who was burned by this experience last night to write a strong letter of complaint or make a visit to the Equatorial Guinean embassy.
Unfortunately it seems the Equatoguineans closed down their London embassy in 2021 after the UK had imposed sanctions on the corrupt regime. While local grinding poverty is the order of the day, you have the President’s son spending more than a quarter of a million dollars on one of Michael Jackson’s gloves.

Anyway, they still have an embassy in Paris, so you could go there. It’s at 42 Avenue Foch, 75116 Paris, France. If you’re going, let me know and maybe I’ll come along at the same time. I could do with a trip to Paris.
