Sometimes you see it at the quiz.
If you’re reading this then it’s probably not you. Regular quizzers are comfortable with the situation but sometimes I meet people who might prefer to deal with the Creature from The Black Lagoon rather than a few quiz questions.:
The place I see this most frequently is the Newsroom. Tinder dates, office groups, couples from Midlothian who just came in to town for a night out and DID NOT EXPECT the quiz.
Some of them are game, but some of them experience something approaching terror. They think they are going to made to look fools.
That’s why the first round is usually a solid 8/10 gimme. Or 6/10 anyway. Although there’s some people you cannot help, no matter how straightforward the questions.
And it’s one of the reasons why I don’t read out all the scores every round, usually just the tens. People who are doing badly don’t need everyone to know.
Of course, no one really cares how you’re doing. They only care how they’re doing. If they’re doing well then they might care about the other top teams but no one is ever logging the faces of those who fail, storing the information away so that they remember forever how thick you really are. It doesn’t work like that. There is nothing to fear.
