NEW(ish) QUIZ!

Michael has been up and running for a few weeks now. Ever been in the Raging Bull on Lothian Road? It’s a REALLY NICE BOOZER and if you’re anywhere near Tollcross you should try drinking and quizzing in it tonight.Quiz is at 9pm.

CHEAT TIPS

Here’s the detail for the music round cheat tip relating to the Raging Bull tonight.

One of the songs in the round is by family favourites Sparks and it sounds like this:

I properly got into Sparks in the 1990s when I bought one their LP ‘Propaganda’ on the strength of the cover art.

The only other thing I knew about Sparks was ‘This Town Aint Big Enough For Both of Us’ which of course is brilliant and had been getting played in the UK since it was a hit in 1974.

Propaganda. Cool sleeve. Amazing Record

Luckily the music on ‘Propaganda’ was also sensational. Mad prog rock stuff, but cool, and pop, not turgid psuedo-classical wank like ELP.

The songs have that great quality where you feel they mean so much but you simultaneously have no idea what they were actually singing about.

And the singing itself is thrillingly good.

Sparks are like Die Antwoord– they are their own category, and they just keep creating.

The big surprise for me later on came when I discovered that Sparks were American.

Everything about them seemed so utterly British: ironic, arched and posed; so it was a shock to learn that the brothers Ron Mael (the one who looks like Hitler and Russell Mael,(the one with the big hair) were from L.A.

Reading more now – the British assumption doesn’t seem so far off. They recorded their first albums in the UK, with British musicians. It makes sense.

Anyway – don’t be a chump – be a chimp and come to the quiz tonight. Any one of them, they’re all magic.

Love,

Dr P
