Dominance at the pub quiz is a tricky business. Pepeeja at the Safari Lounge were dominant last year and started this year in the usual way, winning most of the Tuesday night contests without too much trouble (as long as Drew was there for the music round).

However, they lost again last night after an intemperate bust in the double-or-bust round and, having just checked the records, I’ve realised that’s SEVEN quizzes in a row that they’ve not won.

Which itself is some kind of record.

The lesson? Everyone is human. Everyone is vulnerable. All great political careers end in failure. All great lives end in failure. Everyone dies. Spring may warm and summer may heat, but winter always comes.

We are doomed by our humanity to finally fail and when the sun grows to a massive size and leaves the Earth a charred cinder in a corner of space, all this will be forgotten forever.

Winning is termporary and uncertain. Only final oblivion is guaranteed.

It’s just a question of time.

Music Round Clue for West Port Oracle Tonight:

This is KHALID, one of these modern things that I just don’t “get”. Insanely popular, of course, with 53 million monthly listeners on Spotify. Wow. The video looks like it’s an advert for some online clothes shop. It’s got a car in it that doesn’t move. The car is only for decoration. The fashion shoot models sit on the car and everyone dances a bit and makes that that exact grin of untrammeled joy that people tend to make when they are in colourful YV adverts for mundane products.
