Our resident German bar staff colleague was telling me last night that in Germany there are rules about what you ARE ALLOWED and are NOT ALLOWED to call your child.
There’s a list.
I was told that one of the names you are not allowed to call your kid is “Adolf”, because it brings to mind a certain Austrian.
She also says that you’re not allowed to change your name, unless you have good reason and that “I want to change my name” is not a good reason.
For a country that wants to put fascism behind it, this seems like a lot of rules.
I’ve looked into this a bit, and it seems these are guidelines rather than hard rules. When you register a birth in Germany, some agency has to sign it off. They’re looking out for the baby’s interests, making sure the kid doesn’t get a hard time in later life.
So if you’re not an obvious neo-nazi or Adolf is an old family name that you feel you have to use, they might be open to persuasion. In any case, there are not many Adolfs these days in Germany, but it is not strictly illegal.
Freedom is complicated!
