I had the last quiz of 2025 at the Joker last night. While on Elm Row and Leith Walk I bumped into a few Bar Staff I know.
One was headed up the way with a look of steely and grim determination, heading for his work in the city centre, ready for battle in the hours ahead with some of the world’s biggest morons. Thoughts and prayers to him. I hope he made it.
The other three were a group of friends I know from different pubs who were OFF last night and were taking the opportunity to go to one of their flats and STAY THE HELL AWAY from the pub and people and noise and festivity.
And these are young people. This is what the industry does to you. Don’t worry – they were going to have fun but they were just not going to engage in that crowd thing. I’m sure they ended up having a ball.
Anyway – tonight is the first of January and it’s one more weird night before everything gets back to normal (aka my happy time).
What will it be like at the Newsroom tonight? I don’t know. City Centre? 9pm on the first of Jan? Decent jackpot though.(£150).
Will there be tourists? I hope there’s not too many of them. Nice people, but generally clueless. I hope some of you proper quiz people turn up as well.
Anyway, welcome to 2026. I hope you have a great year. I predict a lot of fish.
