My favourite Pet Shop Boys song is ‘I Want A Dog’ from the ‘Introspective’ album.
When I was growing up, the Pet Shop Boys had a LOT of hits and they were always on Top of The Pops and they were *sort of* cool but I could never quite decide if I liked them or loathed them.
Then, a few years later, I got a copy of ‘I Want A Dog’ and it was easily their best thing. The groove is solid, the house-style piano is excellent, but the real majesty of it is in the lyrics.
It’s a simple song about wanting a dog because otherwise things are all just a bit lonely. It really cuts through. So urban, so modern. Great economic poetry. Doesn’t age. Great song. It’s one of the few that make it on my “PERSONAL FAVOURITES” playlist which only contains songs that I can always listen to and enjoy, no matter what other mood I might be in.
Not that I would ever get a dog. Dogs are fine people for sure, but I couldn’t do the work. I aint picking up no poo.
