Sunday 8th June, 2025

I watched the film ‘Starter for 10’ last night. Made in 2006, the film stars James McAvoy as a working class kid from Essex who goes to University at Bristol in the mid 1980s, mixes with posh kids and then gets on the team for University Challenge.

It’s a decent enough film. Good story – not TOTALLY predictable. Good performances. My only complaint is that there was not enough of the actual quiz in it. I remember trying to watch ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ years ago and feeling the same way.

I NEVER watch TV series because they go on too much. But I did watch ‘The Queen’s Gambit’ a couple of years ago only to disappointed there wasn’t more actual chess in it.

I think I should be learning my lesson by now. If I want to watch University Challenge, I can do that. If I want to watch something about chess, youtube is full of it and I have the chess.com app on my phone.so I can play anytime I like.

Chess is chess. Quizzes are quizzes. Films are just films.

Which reminds me, if they do make a film of my exciting life as a local quizmaster, can I please be played by Tom Cruise or Tom Hanks? Either will do. Thank you.

Anyway, come to the quiz tonight. Details:
