I was chatting to an American woman last night who told me that if you’re convicted of a felony in the USA then you not only lose the vote while you’re in prison, but also FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!
Wow. I thought this sounded a bit much, so I looked it up this morning and it’s partly true.
Some states bar you from voting for life, others restore the vote as soon as you leave prison. Some others have a time that has to elapse between leaving prison and you getting the vote.
Two states (Maine and Vermont) allow you to keep the vote even if you are in jail,.
The other end of the scale is Florida where ten per cent of the voting-age population is disenfranchised because they’re either in prison or have been to prison. That’s mental. Wiki article is here (figures are from 2016).
In the UK, you don’t lose your vote for past crimes but, in prison, it’s mixed. Some prisoners can vote and some cannot.
I think everyone should have the vote, otherwise jail can be a political tool.
