So the big bucks got won last week at the Ship last Wednesday, shared between quiz veterans Marion and Brian. Nice work

That means things will be back to normal tonight in Musselburgh. Ooh, a nice calm one.

I do like a bit of calm. We’re lucky to live in a country where political disputes are largely civil. I hope we appreciate this. It’s nice to not be getting bombed or massacred.

I often find myself amongst the history pages of Wikipedia while researching questions and this morning I came a cross more massacres that I didn’t know about at all: The Spanish Fury in the 16th century when Spanish soldiers would re-take rebellious cities in their Dutch colonies and swiftly apply collective punishment, burning, killing, raping and plundering, for days at a time.

Of course, the more you read, the more complicated it gets but it’s pretty clear that thousands were killed. Definitely nasty.

And this is just one set of massacres. I’ve read about so many over the years while writing history questions that I forget most of them. There have always been events which get nasty and lead to the massacre of civilians on an unhinged scale. It’s nothing new.

So, I’m pleased we’re not experiencing this now. At least, not here.
