I’m only reading French stuff at the moment, on account of getting in the mood for the second draft of my novel which is set in France and is full of French people. I need to study their ways.
I’ve just finished reading Guy de Maupassant short stories (excellent) and have already got through the Camus (cool) and the Sartre (tedious) on my bookshelf. The last one I have is ‘Bonjour Tristesse’ by Francoise Sagan. So far, it’s OK.
Anyway – after this, I’m out of French books in the house. So I’d be grateful for more recommendations. The more French the better. Maupassant was perfect. Every story had death, sex, love, mistresses, honour, dishonour, patriotism and food.
By the way, I stress that I’m looking for recommendations rather than loans of actual books. Please do not attempt to lend me a book because it’ll be wrecked by the time you get it back. I carry them around in the quiz bag and read them on the bus. I dog-ear the pages. It’s fairly abusive. The books get in some state.
