Sunday 3rd September 2023

Third of September. That’s the day the Second World War started.

I remember the date because I liked history at school, particularly the Second World War, which to my childish eyes, seemed glamourous and cool.

After all, those Hollywood epics tended to show the good guys winning, usually with humour thrown in.

American films showed us hilarious tank commanders and cool GIs, battling their way, laughingly, through the pretty parts of Europe. I used to get Victor comic and that was pretty light as well. The war heroes in those pages tended to be maverick tommies going into battles with a cricket bat, and such eccentricities. It all seemed a bit of a laugh.

There was not yet the vogue for ultra-bleak Eastern-front misery films with no good guys at all.

In our house this was only hinted at by the cover art of a few Sven Hassel novels that were in the house but which I’d never read.

But the more history I read on Wikipedia, the worse it gets. If you enjoy a war story, keep it light. Reading about the real stuff just always does your head in.

Anyway – that’s just a tangent based on the date. There will be no gassing, executions, massacres or random murder of civilians at the Percy tonight. Just the quiz. Keep it light!

See you tonight!

Love,
DP
