It’s Saint Andrew’s Day. Does this mean anything to you. I always think Scotland’s national day is a bit of a squib. Nights are getting shorter and everyone’s busy and no one really cares.

And why is the national day tied to a saint? You’ll have seen that news from yesteday that most of the UK is now non-Christian.

I’m somewhat ambivalent about the idea of Scottish independence these days but one good thing about independence would be the opportunity to ditch Saint Andrew’s Day in favour of something in the summer and something not tied to some old Middle Eastern bloke who died in Patras, Greece – which was about as close as he ever got to these shores.

The question stands: What did Saint Andrew ever do for us?

That’s not a quiz question though. It’s an open discussion.

The lyrics show marked departure from the spirit of ‘Ally’s Tartan Army’ twenty years previously when Andy Cameron sang “We’ll really shake them up when we win the world cup”. Things have progressed to the point where Del out of Del Amitri is desperately hoping that Scotland “Don’t come home too soon” – i.e. don’t get knocked out in the first round.
When the record was released it was criticized for being dour and drab and founded on a fear or failure rather than real hope.
Twenty-four years later it just looks like pure and utter fantasy,
