Last night, after I got home, I could hear the drumming from those dirty, no-good hippies up on Calton Hill from my back garden, clear as a bell.

When I was a kid, I thought hippies were cool. They liked vegetables and peace. My favourite character from ‘The Young Ones’ was Neil. To the extent that I got Neil’s album (which was excellent, and still is)

Anyway, I also liked punk and I was listening to the Sex Pistols and they had a line “Never trust a hippy” and I was a bit puzzled by that.

Why would you not trust a hippy? They’re into love and consciousness, aren’t they?

But I can see it more clearly now: Hippies are middle class fakers. Drop out? Yeah, but only temporarily. Abandon possessions and embrace the spiritual? Yep, until it’s time to go back to Surrey and join daddy’s firm.

You’re “in touch with eastern philosophies”? Yes, up to a point. That point being that you roughly know what the word “chakra” means. But what you’re really trying to do there, feller, is get in that hippy girl’s pants.

And once you’ve done that, you return to the UK, access funding networks, set up a business, drench it in a bit of mystic / pagan / flavour and get selling. Pretty soon you have a thriving enterprise, cos middle-class punters love them “spiritual” vibes. It makes them feel less bad about being obviously comfortable in a world of poverty and pain.

Pagan traditions? Let’s take those and make it into a company. Sell tickets? Damn right. Loads of them.

Your classic business hippy is John Lennon sitting at his big posh white piano in a big fancy house singing about the simple life.

Never trust a hippy.

Music Round Clue for Brass Shore tonight:

This is the JONAS BROTHERS, and a song of theirs which appears in the music round tonight at the Brass Monkey Shore. It feels empty, like some kind of retail-park shopping experience. I don’t like it. But the clip I’m using tonight is only 20 seconds long and then it’ll be over.
