The hurt and the pain of Christmas and New Year is starting to heal. We have a full roster of three quizzes tonight. Things are nearly back to normal and it’s January, one of my favourite months of the year.
I like Januarys for the same reason I like Mondays. Another chance to get things right. A fresh start. Another chance not to screw up.
The calendar gives us these built in re-set points to put failures away in a box and go again.

Imagine if it was different: imagine the calendar was simply a number of days that went up by one every single day.
If we’d been counting (arbitrarily) since the birth of Christ, we’d be up to day number 738902 (roughly).
Tomorrow would be day 738903.
Mind you, I suppose even with this system there would be “natural” re-set point – every ten days, every hundred days, every thousand.
But it all seems a bit numerical and digital. I enjoy the poetry of days and months. “January” has a clean sound to it. “Monday” sounds resolute. “Wednesday” sounds like a spaghetti alla vongole: a mix and a mess.“ “July” sounds rich and louche.
