We wanted one more pint last night but Port O’Leith was shut so we went to Malones.

There was a singer-songwriter guy in there going on about how the only real truth is pain and that people who work in banks are just putting money in their wallets but they don’t know the real world or the truth. I’m paraphrasing, but basically his point of view was that anyone who makes decent money was a wank.

I disagreed on both points said that I believed that pain is not the only truth. Happiness and contentment can be the truth as well.

Surely?

And I was compelled to point out that all the people he was having a go at, e.g. bank managers, are real people too. Making money doesn’t mean an imaginary mannequin.

He wasn’t interested in this and whipped out his phone and begun playing one of his own songs, as loudly as his device would allow. None of us had asked to hear it.

And he seemed like a nice enough feller but if you ARE a singer-songwriter – my advice is to NOT just start playing your stuff at people who are just trying to have a pint. At least wait until they ask to hear it.
