Monday Monday – the 8th July

Pub Quizzes in Edinburgh Tonight:

7pm – Brass Monkey Leith. Jackpot: £100. Cheat: Bananarama (music round)

9pm – Safari Lounge. Jackpot £30. Cheat news: Princess Eugenie(pic round)

Monday is cool. Come and be part of it.

Here’s the music round cheat for the Brass tonight. It’s 80s pop pyramids Bananarama:

The Rama

Bananarama were bigger than the Spice Girls when I was a kid.

Was this because the Spice Girls just hadn’t been invented yet or just because Bananarama were better?

No one knows the answer to that but Bananarama had loads of hits, largely with the Stock Aitken and Waterman production which defined the UK pop sound of the late 1980s.

Stock Aitken and Waterman were hit machine monsters. They wrote and produced buckets and buckets of stone cold smash hits.

Mel & Kim, Jason Donovan, Rick Astley, Kylie Minogue, and Dead or Alive all had number one hits on the back of SAW production.

Back then it was cool to hate them. It was so mainstream. With the benefit of age you look back and think “those guys were geniuses”.

But where do geniuses get their inspiration? The answer is Italo-Disco – the 1980s Italian music style that dominated Europe’s dance floors.

Anyway – it’s a rollover at the Brass and it’s cosy at the Safari so I’ll see you at one of them later…

Word.

See ya later – x
