QUIZ NEWS – Debut quiz for Clarks Bar tonight – be the first champion of the new quiz. Clarks Bar has been a New Town fixture for many decades. Then it was hipster, then it was a horror theme pub (I heard) but it’s back to being normal now, care of our friends Murray, Eilidh and Kier (connections from Brass Monkey and Waverley). It will be great.

I was coming home from England yesterday on the train. I boarded at Newcastle but the train stood still and the time ticked on. Obviously we were delayed.
Announcer came on: the service, once it got going, might terminate at Berwick-upon-Tweed because a person had been hit by a train north of Berwick.
The passengers sighed.
The next announcement said we’d definitely be terminating at Berwick, the person who had hit was a FATALITY and the lines north of Berwick were closed.
The passengers made a noise that expressed disappointment but also respectful sympathy. After all, someone had just died.
We got going, everyone apprehensive, talking about bus or taxi options and what to do once we reached Berwick. Then, as we’re getting into Berwick, a new announcement: “The line is now clear – we will not be terminating at Berwick, we’re going all the way to Edinburgh!”
Instant cheers and applause. The fatality? Forgotten. Must have cleared it up nice and fast. Well done the railway company. Yasss!
Moral: whoever you are, people do have some sympathy for your situation, but it’s limited.
