I like drawing. I’m not that good at it, but I enjoy it and I do it a lot. This year I’ve mainly been drawing fish, but the one thing I really wish I could draw well is peoples’ faces.
It fascinates me how well caricaturists can make a quickly-doodled face REALLY look like a particular individual, just with a few lines.
I think some of it may be to do with the overall shape of a person’s head.
Some people have round heads, some people have thin heads, and some people have huge heads that are the same shape as a massive piece of sweetcorn.
I remember seeing a guy with an extreme case of this, on Dumbarton Road in Partick, Glasgow, circa 1994. I caught a glimpse of the extraordinary head and said “Whoa!”. The driver said “what?” and I told him what I’d seen.
The driver turned the van around and we drove back for a better look. On second viewing, it was clear it was some kind of medical condition. I’ve never seen anything like it since. I hope the guy is OK.
