I met a marine cable engineer last night at Brass Monkey Gorgie who has worked all over the world, mainly doing renewables.
I asked him if tidal power will ever really take off and he said it “could,” but the sheer amount of energy you get from one oil well makes tidal (currently) a bad investment, so no one is doing it.
His view: the profit motive combined with short-term politics will keep drilling oil until it’s all drilled.
He completely (more or less) agreed with me that the problem is democracy and we should ditch all parliaments and switch to a strong-man (or lady) dictator-driven model.
Well, maybe he didn’t fully agree with that, but he’d worked in China and he acknowledged that the Chinese do get stuff done. In his words “they make a ten year plan and stick to it. They think longer-term. Our CEO changes every three years.”
Depressing? I don’t know. There is good news, though… By this time next week, all the festival wanks will have gone home to London. So there’s that.
