Meanwhile, In the kitchen last night I was playing a Roger Whittaker song, Mexican Whistler. I said to my daughter “That’s Roger Whittaker – he was the King of the Whistlers”.
She immediately asked me what I would I choose: if I could be either the King of the Whistlers or the ten-thousandth best at chess in the world?
I chose King of The Whistlers.
World number 10,000 at chess would be amazing. Six hundred million people play Chess regularly, so you’d be firmly in the top 1 per cent OF the top 1 per cent. And there’s not much that I’ve experienced that’s as satisfying as winning at chess.
But – imagine being THE BEST whistler anywhere. You could probably make a career out of that. And if not, it’s just cool. You could whistle Beethoven or the Butthole Surfers.
Also, I feel like you would need to work hard to maintain the chess status. Whereas the whistling is more innate, if you know what I mean?
