There was nearly a hate crime last night at the Brass Monkey.
They were, as usual, playing some random old stuff from youtube on the pub’s screens. A lot of the pubs do this. Examples of popular themes in the last few years have been train cab videos and marble olympics.
But suddenly last night there was a bit of a gasp and a scramble for the remote.
Causing the stramash was an old Warner Brothers cartoon, possibly from the 1940s, whose depiction of non-white characters was, as they say, “of its time.”
The bar staff were fast on the draw and quickly replaced the outrage with monster trucks. Safe ground!
It’s partly a generational thing. By the time I was growing up, depictions of non-white people had moved on quite a bit, but it wasn’t so far in the past that anyone my age would think to scramble to turn off a cartoon.
Are we touchier these days? Or just more aware?
