I slaughtered an answer given last night in the same-letter round. I asked which city has the famous Maracana football stadium, which has hosted the World Cup final twice. True answer is Rio de Janeiro.
But one team wrote “Russia”.
On the mic, I laid into this as “the worst answer I had ever seen” I said I was “physically upset” by how bad this answer was. You know, without shaming the team involved by name. I’m not a complete arse.
Anyway, they told me afterwards that they had misheard CITY as COUNTRY. At this point, the answer seems more reasonable. So they do know the difference between a city and a country (some people genuinely don’t) and Russia DID host the World Cup recently so maybe they did in the past..? It’s kind of reasonable.
Then again, listening is very much part of being good at the quiz. If you don’t listen properly (or have at least one designated-listener on the team) then you are going to screw up.
It’s just sense, folks. Quiz sense.
