INFO: Henry is standing in for Isla at the Porty Tap tonight and does NOT have a card reader. Jackpots will need to be paid in cash. So bring some change and/or get some cashback from the bar. Should be OK for tonight.

One of my favourite songs at this year’s Eurovision did NOT qualify for the final. ‘Laika Party’ by Emmy was representing Ireland and it was about Laika the dog who got launched into space by the Russians back in 1957.

Laika’s real story is sad: She was a stray dog in Moscow and was scooped off the streets and blasted into space by the Communists to win the race to be first to put a living being into orbit.

The plan was never for Laika to come back alive and, indeed, she overheated and died during her fourth orbit of Earth. It’s pretty shitty.

One of the scientists, Oleg Gazenko, who worked on the project later said:

“The more time passes, the more I’m sorry about it. We shouldn’t have done it… We did not learn enough from this mission to justify the death of the dog.”

That was in 1998. At least there was some regret, albeit far too late.

I’m not exactly a “dog-person” or an “animal lover”, but that kind of thing is just not cool, totally avoidable.

So if you take one thing from this post, please make it that you don’t blast a dog into space. As Mister Gazenko points out, IT’S JUST NOT WORTH IT.

Anyway, see you tonight:
