It’s all very well me talking about Eurovision but, like most people, I was just watching it on the television. Quizmaster Bonni is a bigger Eurovision fan than me and she was actually there in Basel.
She’s back tonight at Kitty’s (8pm) and if you’re there, I’m sure will be delighted to tell you all about her Swiss adventures.
Yesterday I ended up reading various threads on Facebook and Twitter about Eurovision and realised that one of the oddities of the ESC is the way in which hardcore fans take it LESS seriously than outsiders.
For instance, you can find all these mega-gammon threads, chock-full of of comments from thousands of angry Brits who “haven’t watched it since Bucks Fizz” but somehow know that it’s “Rubbish these days”.
Despite not being fans of the contest, they are FURIOUS that the UK entry didn’t do well and put this down to the supposed fact that “they hate us”. They conclude that the “BBC should stop funding this.”
It’s completely mental, especially given that all of them claim to not watch it. So why do they care so much?
Meanwhile, actual fans of the ESC are busy enjoying the contest and enjoying their favourite new songs from the contest. Who won or didn’t win is largely irrelvant.
