It’s getting to that biting point of the year where most of the money we give away will be getting handed over while it’s dark outside.
The mystery of the planets always gives me mixed feelings of security yet fragility.
It’s a quite a long time since my primary school books taught me how it works: how the seasons are affected by the tilt of the Earth and the annual journey round the Sun.
And after all these years, the rules still apply.
In fact, history shows that this pattern has been there for centuries, for millennia. Winter has always been winter.
And yet it all depends on a fine balance of gravity, which is not a given. It could be disrupted whenever the universe decides. The galactic equivalent of a sixteen-pound bowling ball could come rolling along the Solar System’s lane at any minute and send these planetary skittles all over the place, making gutterballsof us all.
You know, like an asteroid or a black hole or whatever.
This thing that’s keeping us right seems relentlessly dependable (for thousands of years) and yet truly tenuous.
Chaos is the order of the day. And that’s why our jackpots total £380 tonight.
