I visited the Commonwealth Games on Friday, taking in the 3×3 basketball.
The sport itself was skillful and fun to watch but the occasion was marred by having a DJ playing family-friendly (but really loud) hip-hop all the way though.
At first I thought it was just between games, but the music continued through the actual games. You could hardly hear yourself think.
The idea is clear enough. They don’t want it to be too quiet, so the music is supposed to build atmosphere, but it doesn’t work.
Sports atmosphere is built by people shouting out and reacting to what’s happening on the court. But the music at this event was so loud that no one was shouting out.
In between games, the MC, the hype-man emerges and exhorts the crowd to “give some energy” and “make some noise”. Well, we might have done that, if we’d had the chance. If anyone in the crowd had “made some noise”, we wouldn’t have heard it over the Black Eyed Bloody Peas.
One of the great things about my quiz is the supporting background music which is loud/quiet at the appropriate times and doesn’t solely consist of Coolio and Jay-Z.
