I cycled home on a VOI bike last night, the first time I’ve used one. I used to cycle to and from the quizzes a lot, and was wondering if these bikes might be an alternative to a taxi home. Here’s my review:
Handling: Weird. The big basket on the front means you can’t see your front wheel properly. This is awkward, especially on the mean, potholed streets of North Edinburgh.
Ease: Yeah, fairly easy to work the app and so on.
Speed: You have no control over gears or how much the electric kicks in. Being used to my own gears, this was odd but it did seem to give the right boost at the right time.
Cost: I forgot that I was being charged by the minute and ending up stopping and chatting for a while when I saw the staff outside the Brass Shore. Ended up being £3.20 but could have been £1.50. Comparative taxi journey: About £12.
Overall: I thought about using this last Monday and on Thursday but on both occasions there were no bikes available nearby. Might end up using it now and again.
