I was talking with Joe last night about that thing that get’s published every year saying that Finland are the “happiest” country in the world.
Obviously this is down to low expectations. Finns might be happy (with their lot), but you wouldn’t call them jolly.
If you’re talking jolly, then I think the Brits would be up there. All the Scandi countries (with the exception of Denmark) would be much lower on the list.
Based on my own experiences, here’s five countries I think could be contenders to reach the Top 20 Most Jolly Countries:
Germany – All the times I’ve been there, it’s always hilarious. I suppose if you’re German, you have to have a sense of humour, given the history.
The UK – Easily the highest number of jokes-per-square-mile that I’ve witnessed.
Denmark – They don’t seem so hung up on giving a hoot.
Mexico – I visited once and there was a strong undercurrent of jollification
Australia – basically Brits
Five countries that are definitely NOT making the cut: Greece, France, Finland, Netherlands, Sweden
Both Joe and I admitted we didn’t know enough about African countries to put any on either list. Same goes for Asia.
