Long-standing team ‘Michael J Fox – King of Jenga’ were at the Newsroom quiz on Thursday night. But they chose a new name.
Instead, they called themselves ‘Under The Radar’.
This is what can happen when you grow up a bit. Gradually, things like Motor Neurone Disease become less hilarious and you start thinking about the human impact.
To be twenty-years-old (particularly as a bloke) is to be (usually) pretty awful. You’re the king of the world. Suffering doesn’t exist. Others are weak. You laugh at their failings. Ha ha.
But as the years unwind, you gradually start dialling it down with the edgy chat and the quiz questions about massacres. Some of you might remember “the jokes round” at the quiz. I don’t do that any more. The submissions I used to get towards the end of its run were, increasingly, just hate crimes.
I joked with ‘Under The Radar’. I said “You have matured! You’ll be helping out in the community next”.
They laughed of course. Come on now. One step at a time.
