There was a group at Brass Monkey Shore last night who named their team “Ireland 32 – Scotland 18”, presumably in reference to the rugby match which disrupted our schedules on Sunday.
This team then promptly finished the quiz in 20th place out of 21 teams. I suppose this makes its own point.
(The only team who were worse were a pair of young women who specifically expressed that they were only there to drink a lot of red wine and had no real interest in the quiz.)
But what is the point made? The point is NOT that liking rugby makes you thick. After all, there are some quiz regulars who do pretty well at knowledge and stuff but also (for some unfathomable reason) enjoy rugby.
I think the point is that pinning your own standing and honour upon the sporting fortunes of men over whom you have no control is, at best, unwise.
Reflected glory is pale glory. The quiz finds you out.
