Which has a larger capacity: the biggest cricket stadium in the world or the biggest football stadium?
This caused a bit of bother the other night at the Persevere. I had the answer as cricket (Narendra Modi stadium in India: 132,000 seats)
But I was quickly challenged by regular star team ‘The Plebs’ who pointed out that the Rungrado, the big national football stadium in North Korea holds 150,000.
A live fact-check ensued, quickly finding sources giving the North Korean stadium as 150k. Result – I accepted the intervention.
Which was slightly confusing, as my own number for the Rungrado stadium was 114,000.
I looked into this in more detail this morning, searching for more information so I could fix the question.
I soon found the problem. A number of perfectly reputable sites give the figure as 150k. Other reputable sites give the figure as 114k. Hmm!
Finally I found an explanation that when the Korean stadium opened in 1989, its seated capacity was given as 150,000. Some years later, some benches were replaced with individual seats, which resulted “some observers’ estimates” now putting the capacity at 114k.
So, pretty inconclusive. And given that we’re talking about North Korea, the truth is a slippery fish.
Ultimately, I’ve taken the question out of the database. It’s too loose. This is the kind of work that goes on behind the scenes here at DP Quiz to try and ensure that everything is right all the time. It’s not easy!
