Some Americans won the quiz last night at Brass Monkey Leith. This rarely happens.

American teams at the quiz usually serve the purpose of reminding us how dumb they are (as a nation). It gives us comfort.

Caveat: This team last night (DOG DICK AFTERNOON) did have a Scottish guy in their team, but he’s been living in Kansas City for ten years, so the caveat has its own caveat.

To shore up our national ego, there was another American team in attendance who fulfilled the traditional function of US teams and finished last. They scored ten points in the whole quiz. They were really bad.

There are regular teams around Edinburgh who have a useful American in their team. I mean, a lot of our culture comes from the States and that leads to quite a few geography, sport, and history questions on American themes, as well as just entertainment questions (of which there are many).

To be fair, Americans are usually just about the nicest people you could meet at the quiz. They’re usually personable, polite and open.

And of course, without the Americans, how would we have any freedom?

So thanks, Yanks. Keep coming to the quiz. We love you.
