Story from last week:

I was chatting to a guy at Monkey Shore last week who was up from England with his mates on a lads’ holiday (they’re in their 50s/60s).  He happens to be a retired pharmacist.

Prompted by the Shore’s ‘Slava Ukraina’ blackboard, we got on to talking about Ukraine and this guy told me he’s been doing a thing where he gets surplus drugs from the pharmacy he used to work in and he gets them sent to Ukraine where all kinds of pharmaceuticals are badly needed.

I’m deliberately not mentioning the man’s name or location because he told me this is all slightly illegal.

Apparently when unused meds are returned to a pharmacy in the UK, they must be destroyed. Even if they’ve not been opened. By law. Now, obviously there must be a good original reason for such a law but this guy has decided to circumvent the rules and get himself in between the meds and the bin and gets them out to Ukraine.

He wasn’t boastful or big about all this. It was matter of fact. You could tell the guy was just doing whatever was in his power to help people who are getting it in the neck.

It’s a good illustration that doing what’s right isn’t always the same as doing what’s legal. And it’s also a good illustration of what people are like. Most people are good people. That’s how I see it anyway.
