I don’t often do this but I gave a prize for best team name last week at the Brass Monkey Leith.
I chose PABLO’S HIPPOS for the prize because I’d been talking to the team about their name and it’s a good story.
Basically, in the 1980s and 1990s when he was one of the richest men in the world, the Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar imported animals from all over the world to create his own private zoo at his ranch near Medellin.
These animals included hippos. And once Escobar was shot dead by Colombian police in 1993 and his empire collapsed, the hippos remained and multiplied and are now wild.
There are a couple of documentaries on youtube. This is the BBC one which looks all right:
