Last Thursday Of The Fringe. Begone, Performers

Quizzes Tonight:

7pm – Argyle Bar (Cellar). Jackpot £120. Cheat answer: France Gall (music round)

9pm – The Newsroom. Jackpot £50. Cheat answer: Juggernaut (pic round)

NOTE: We are UPSTAIRS tonight at the Argyle Bar (i.e. the ground floor instead of the cellar)

Ooooh. It’s nearly over. One more week upstairs at the ARgyle for me. A couple of more days of total idiots clogging up the town, then we can all relax as they run back off to London to check whether they’re famous yet and whether someone’s offered them a slot on8 out of 10 cats or some such shit.

Good luck performers. See you next year.

Anyway – one or two more nights left of their company. Come to the quiz. Give yourself some breathing space.

£50 at the Newsy and £120 at the Argyle.

By the way, here’s tonight’s music round cheat which is for the Argyle: The song is a personal favourite – France Gall’s winning Eurovision entry from 1965. It’s a belter:

I mean, not as good as Marti Pellow, but still excellent.

August In Edinburgh. It’s Hell Get Me Out Of Here… Or Is It?

Quizzes in Edinburgh Tonight:

7pm – Brass Monkey Leith. Jackpot:£50. Cheat: Bad Company (music round)

9pm – Safari Lounge. Jackpot £150. Cheat news: Beastie Boys (pic round)

It’s hitting week three of the Fringe and everyone has had enough. Edinburgh is a nightmare. You can’t GET anywhere. You can’t get served anywhere without an enormous queue.

Well, not exactly.

Of course, the simple solution is that all you have to do is step OUTSIDE the city centre.

I knew a woman from Down South who once had a fringe show on Broughton Street, very near the Cask & Barrel, or whatever that big boozer is called (on the corner of London Street). I remarked that it was a good venue, city centre and she looked at me like I was mad.

As far as she was concerned, Broughton Street could have been the moon. She said NO ONE would come to her show – it was too far away.

So that’s the festival mentality: If it’s not EH1 then it can get tae fuck.

The upside of this is that the city remains relatively calm outside the bubble o’madness. So get yourself to Leith, get yourself to Abbeyhill if you need a break from the city centre crazies.

Come and do the quiz. And win things. And be happy.

Here’s tonight’s music round cheat which applies to the early quiz at Brass Monkey Leith:

Best youtube comment for this comes from someone called Kevin:

“Came for the song, stayed for the chest hair. Not gay.”

Tonight’s quizzes are located less than a mile apart. You could, feasibly, do the double.

First one at the Brass Leith concludes at 8.30pm and the second one at the Safari Lounge begins at 9pm (although I don’t usually hit the first question until about 10 past or quarter past)

Wednesday – Only One Wednesday Quiz Per Week During August

Quizzes tonight:

7pm – The Joker & The Thief. Jackpot £30. Cheat: Roxy Music (music round)

9pm – Brass Monkey, Drummond Street. Quiz is off during the festival – Jackpot will be £120 when we start back in September

So last week was a disaster at the Joker – with minute to go before quiz time, the electricity blew up and the pub was snookered.

The power is back on and you will now hear last week’s intended quiz, tonight!

The music round hint for tonight is one of my all time favourite bands: Roxy Music. The sound on this video is shite, but it’s still a great song:

You cannae beat the Roxy.

Meanwhile, Cunto cards continue to fly. If you want a packet of the game that’s rocking the nation, hit me up – I usually have two or three packets with me at the quiz.

You can also get them online

Look at the happy people playing Cunto at the Joker the other week. Yeah:

People playing Cunto

Sunday Pub Quizzes In Good Old Edinburgh

Tonight’s quizzes :

6pm – The Persevere. Jackpot: £60. Cheat: Londonbeat (music round)

8pm – Tolbooth Tavern. Jackpot: £30. Cheat: Zimbabwe (pic round)

You’ll recognise the cheat-music clip from the Persevere music round tonight. It’s a 1991 super-classic:

Mental. Not as mental as anyone who bothered visiting Hampden the other night to witness the most inevitable 0-1 home defeat of all time.

I don’t even know why this is in my head. I’ve found it harder and harder and harder to give hoot what Scotland is doing in football as the years wear on. What’s that? 20 years ago now since France 98. Le sigh.

9pm – The Newsroom. Jackpot £100. Cheat answer: Lindisfarne (music round)

This is the music round cheat from tonight’s music round at the Newsroom: (there’s a guy with an absurd rainbow jumper in the band – don’t miss the clip)

By the way, don’t you just love it when you win the money at the quiz and just strew it over the table like surplus food?

This prize opportunity is represented by Dr Paul. Come to the pub and give thanks!

New Year, New Fear

Tonight’s quizzes:

7pm – Argyle Bar (Cellar). Jackpot £30. Cheat answer: James Last (music round – see below)

9pm – The Newsroom. Jackpot £50. Cheat answer: Mudflap Girl (pic round)

Welcome back to the world. I love normality, in terms of routine and knowing what the fuck is going on.

Christmas time and all that muck drives me mental. Hooray for January.

The music round free answer for tonight at the Argyle is legendary German bandleader: James Last, aka “The Gentleman of Music”.

James Last died in 2015 and it is one of my life’s regrets that I never saw him perform live with his famous Orchestra. Luckily he made plenty of recordings.

Some artists are lucky to release 65 SONGS. James last had 65 ALBUMS which reached the UK charts. He is the most phenomenally successful musician that you’ve never heard of.

His UK success is outstripped by his popularity in Germany where he was awarded 200 gold discs and 14 platinum discs.

His style is loose and tight at the same time and is the greatest music ever made. If you don’t like James Last it’s because you are an idiot.

Here’s the tune from tonight’s music round:

Monday Banana

Great £250 win for Luke last Monday. Back to some sense of normality tonight.

We’re at a quarter-of-a-grand at the Brass Leith…

7pm – Brass Monkey Leith. Jackpot: £50. Cheat: One of the answers in the music round is an old band called Animotion. Hear their song by clicking on the video below…

9pm – Safari Lounge. Jackpot £120. Cheat news: one of the answers in the picture round is Liver, as in the organ. Yeuuuucch.

This tune is not one of the best-known 80s tunes but it’s quintessential eighties. Yeah, I’m using that word.

Heavy synthesizers, big drums, big bass, big everything. Even the vocals are ‘eighties’. I can’t exactly describe how, but they are.

And there’s loads of dressing-up in the video. And there’s a swimming pool.
