Thursday Night Quizzes

Quizzes Tonight:

7pm – Argyle Bar (Cellar). Jackpot £60. Cheat answer: Train (pic round)

9pm – The Newsroom. Jackpot £100. Cheat answer: Dan Dare (pic round).

The cheat answers for tonight include this song by Train: I can’t stand it. It came out in 2012 and feels like every template ever written for bland-as-possible radio playlists which are calculated to offend no-one and inspire no-one.

It’s the same shit as Maroon 5 and all that type of bollocks.

It’s classified by Google as “Adult Contemporary” which is a long phrase for “Dull”.

And if the song is bad, the video is worse.

What a load of shit.

Anyway, from crap videos to the greatest film of all time. As you know, I’ve been counting down the list of my ten favourite films of all time.

Here is the chart so far:

10 .Flash Gordon (1980)

9. Jesus Christ Superstar (1979)

8. The Good The Bad & The Ugly (1966)

7. Zardoz (1974)

6. Das Boot (1981)

5. The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou (2004)

4. Hair (1979)

3. Mary Poppins (1964)

2. They Live (1988)

This week:

1. Aguirre: the Wrath of God (1972)

I had often heard about this film but never watched it until a couple of years ago. It is satisfyingly brilliant and I watched it again straight away.

It’s a Werner Herzog joint so it’s already almost automatically going to be interesting but the action and the crazy adventure draws you in completely until you too are dying on the Amazon, merely by watching.

Basically it the 16th century, its South America and the lunatic Spanish conquistadores are determined to find El Dorado, the city of Gold.

Instead they find madness and murder and a whole lot of Mother Nature, spurning their goliath ambitions of riches and conquest in the same way an elephant would disregard a used bus ticket.

Kalus Kinski is the madman Aguirre, a warrior hungry for power, gold and perhaps immortality.

The crazy in his performance is aided by the fact that he was obviously an actual madman.

Much has been written on the making of the film, and the difficulties and impossibilities thereof, including the epic fights between director and star.

Like a lot of films in my top ten, music is important. The soundtrack to this is just great. I was recorded by some crafty German band named Popol Vuh and it’s got just the right balance of strangeness, beauty and menace, perfectly in sync with the action.

I could talk about this film all day but, to be honest, the internet has been up and down this morning like a Dundonian who keeps thinking he’s seen a five pence piece on the ground, so I’m going to publish it and get the fuck on with Thursday.

Here’s some key pictures:

Taking unauthorized photos and calling customers “c**ts” on social media is not cool.

Reported to head office, the local paper and there is a viral thread on reddit.

Greetings! Thanks for the input but If you are from the USA you may not understand the context and culture of the word “cunt” in Scotland.

It’s more friendly than you may imagine.

      Enjoy your visit!
