There was a time twenty years when you couldn’t move for R.E.M.

First the Indie kids liked them. Then people who liked American novelty things like drinking coffee and watching ‘Friends’ started liking them.

Then it was Radio 1 and every other person in Britain. It was so dull. I used to hate the sound of them, despite thinking the songs were kind of OK.

They had one of those singers who looked and sounded like a pontificating twat. Like Bono but American, so even worse.

Then they just stopped and gave up and no one heard of them ever again.

After a five-year clean-up period R.E.M. ceased to exist and the new generation came through, untouched by their pish.

So fair play to the R.E.M.
